Member Since: 2008 City: Clemmons State: North Carolina County: Forsyth County, NC Bio: Apprentice in clay with Doris Petersham Sybil was raised on a dairy farm in Iredell County, NC. As a child, she says, “I dug clay from our creek and made my own toys from it, setting them in the sun to dry.” After high school, she pursued a commercial art degree at Central Piedmont Community College, married and raised two daughters while working various jobs. Over the years, she developed her skills in pottery through courses at Mitchell, Forsyth Technical, and Randolph Community Colleges. She has attended workshops at every opportunity, enhancing her skills under the watchful eyes of Daniel Johnson, Cynthia Bringle, Bill Van Guilder, Charlie Tefft, Haynes Bayless, Benn Owen III, and Matt Jones. Creating a beautiful and useful piece of pottery out of clay gives Sybil a great sense of worth. “When someone admires a piece of pottery I made, and desires to take the piece home to live with daily or share with friends, I find my greatest motivation. I am striving to achieve an advanced ceramic education in order to be exceptional at my craft.” Sybil is a full-time apprentice under her master artisan mentor, Doris Petersham. Since beginning the program in May, Sybil has invested more than 700 hours of her time in the studio: at the wheel or slab roller, mixing glazes, designing and cutting stencils, experimenting with new tools, loading and unloading the kiln, determining the true cost of her products, and discussing with her mentor the many aspect of becoming an artisan entrepreneur.
