Member Since: 2006 Media Specialties: Mixed Media; Photography; Wood; City: North Wilkesboro State: North Carolina County: Wilkes County, NC Bio: Artist: Harold Humphrey born: 1951 place: Coronado, CA. Born into a Navy family there was much moving involved; we lived in Coronado CA., Washington State, Florida, Indiana, Chicago, back to Coronado and then Japan, returning to Coronado in 1962. I graduated high school in Coronado in 1968. I received my Bachelor's of Architecture degree from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1974. I received my architectural license in 1984 in California. I visited Morocco in 1976, moved to Fairbanks, AK in 1976, moved to Santa Barbara, CA in 1977, moved to Atlanta, GA in 1984 and North Wilkesboro, NC in 1994 where I still reside. In 2002 I set myself a goal of producing 100 pieces of art in 100 days. While not accomplishing the work in 100 days, I did complete the 100 pieces in 6 months and had a private showing in my architectural office. Subsequently, I donated the work to Communities in Schools for a silent auction. The various pieces were wood carvings, found objects, paintings, drawings, pastels, ceramics, stone carvings, photography and digital art. In 2004 I showed 10 pieces of stone sculpture at the Wilkes County Public Library in North Wilkesboro NC. In 2006 3 stone sculptures were displayed at "Talia's Coffee Shop" in North Wilkesboro, NC. Also in 2006 I displayed 6 stone sculptures at the "Spiritoso Arts Series" at the First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro, NC. In 2007 I displayed 35 digital art images titled "Transformations" at the Wilkes County Public Library. Also in 2007 I received second place in the 3D Art category for the Clifford Morrison Memorial Juried Art Show in Elkin, NC. Artist Statement What makes me an artist: While my architectural experience and degree are closely related to art in terms of design, history and actualization, there is also an inborn urge that drives me. I discovered that when I design, there is a visualization process in which anything is possible even when it seems impossible. I can see it and when working in my medium I can touch it. I am partial to the taking away process with the stone, and the whittling away of material in general. When I work with the stone, my hands do things I think I don't already know how to do. It's like being moved by a force of nature, and it's immensely satisfying. When I begin with a new stone, I never know what the finished piece will look like; this is in contrast to architecture where the finished product is figured out beforehand. The digital images I create are tangible and visible representations of how I think. My art is a blending of the conscious and the sub-conscious, I've noticed the finished piece speaks to me on many levels and I hope to the observer as well. If I were asked; what does the art mean? I would say; I hope it always means something different. This Member's Galleries: This bio page has been viewed 1118 times.
