Member Since: 2006 Media Specialties: Jewelry; City: Winston-Salem State: North Carolina County: Forsyth County, NC Bio: Unlike some artists, I didn’t want to be an artist when I was young. I was more interested in philosophy and political theory and, if I’d thought about it, would have aid I didn’t have the talent to be an artist. Then things changed. I took a class in beading at the Sawtooth Center for the visual Arts in Winston-Salem and fell in love. There is really no other way to explain it. Everything just clicked – the look of the beads, the colors, and the way they felt in my hands. I began to do beadwork – particularly making jewelry. It was a life changing experience. I continued to take classes. I also realized that I’ve always had artistic energy, and that, before the experience at the Sawthooth Center, had used it to express myself in the way I dressed and constructed the environments in which I lived and worked. Now I had a whole new area to explore. In my jewelry I incorporate the training I’ve had and my fascination with color. I love beautiful objects of all kinds, particularly those that are functional – a well made chair, a beautiful bowl, a glass vase. Because I believe everyone should be able to have and use beautiful objects, my goal is to design and create pieces that are beautiful, of excellent quality and affordable. I use beads, paper, and minerals to create my designs. I am inspired by the play of colors, textures and the interplay of various beading stitches as they come together to form a finished product. I take great pleasure in creating with my hands and watching the object come into being. My designs are inspired by nature, my experiences and the objects which surround all of us. I am delighted when someone falls in love with one of my creations and I take pleasure seeing the enjoyment they get from wearing it.
