Member Since: 2006 Media Specialties: Fiber; City: Lewisville State: North Carolina County: Forsyth County, NC Bio: Kay is an independent studio artist in fiber and comes from a varied background which began in her childhood as she sewed a few pieces of clothing for herself and her parents. She had a strong yearning to learn the techniques for all types of handwork such as knitting, embroidery, crocheting, quilting, basketry, and most especially weaving. Her intense fascination for and interest in the process of weaving prompted her to always ask her parents to take her back to the "cabin with the loom" (Brenegar Cabin) on their weekend excursions to the mountains of North Carolina. Kay graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and Queens College with a BS degree in nursing, after which she married and began a career in nursing. Throughout the ensuing years she and her husband reared two children to adulthood. During these years Kay continued her handwork, improved her skills and level of education in these areas, and incorporated a lot of handwork into the arts and crafts activities she planned for her children’s summer and weekend fun-filled opportunities. This burning desire to weave and to create fabric led Kay into her second career, that of fiber art. She had entered another realm of her life which she dearly loved, that of creating fabric with the color, texture, and design that she visualized in her mind. While largely self-taught in the beginning by reading textbooks and listening to advice from experienced weavers, Kay has studied at Sawtooth Center for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC and at Penland School of Craft. She has also studied with four of the most prominent fiber artists in the United States, Virginia West, Madelyn van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, and Bonnie Inouye. Kay’s inspiration for her work is drawn from the beauties of nature she sees as she and her husband travel throughout this country and abroad to enjoy God’s unspoiled world: birds, wildlife, sunsets, rivers, oceans, lakes, landscapes, sky, and clouds. Kay has a studio in her home in Lewisville, NC as well as at Fiber Company, a co-operative gallery in the Arts District in Winston-Salem, NC. She is an exhibiting member of Yadkin Valley Craft Guild. Kay exhibits her work in galleries in North Carolina as well as at craft shows in North Carolina and has won the "Best in Show" award at Art in the Park in Blowing Rock.
